LiMo handsets to launch this year

LiMo handsets to launch this year

February 10, 2017

The Linux for Mobile (LiMo) foundation has announced that its member companies are planning to launch a number of cost effective Linux-based handsets by the end of the year.

The new devices won’t be placed to rival high-end smartphones such as the iPhone and the G1, but will take on difficult to understand mobile operating systems such as OSE and Nucleus.

Six operators – including DoCoMo, Orange, SK Telecom, Telefónica, Verizon Wireless and Vodafone – have committed to releasing the new LiMo handsets.

The news follows agreement between LiMo members on a standard for mini web applications and widgets on mobile handsets.

The Bondi standard – announced Monday – draws on web code such as HTML, CSS, and Javascript, making it easier for developers already coding widgets to work on similar ideas for mobile handsets.

The second release of the LiMo platform will be on display at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona next week.
